Dear Insider,

I trained and practiced in London my entire career.

After completing medical school at King’s College London (MBBS, 1984) and my junior doctor year on the wards, I entered neurology training across the London deanery.

Those rotations included time at The National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, Queen Square (UCLH), and they shaped everything that followed.

I learned to slow down, to listen for the story behind a symptom, and to turn intimidating test results into next steps my patients and their families could take home.

As a consultant neurologist, my clinical week revolved around a cognitive disorders and memory clinic... with a focus on young-onset dementia, posterior cortical atrophy, Lewy body disease, and vascular cognitive impairment.

I loved research, but my true gift was translation.

I discovered the drastic need for empathy in neurology... patients are not a list of symptoms or a brain scan... they are real people with real fears and worries.

They don’t need another clinical buzzword or jargon-filled pamphlet... they need a map... something that tells them... here’s what we know, here’s what we don’t, and here’s what we’ll do together next so you know you aren’t alone.

What finally pushed me into public writing was the gap between neuroscience and real life.

I watched the supplement and health industries’ dangerous claims of “miracle cures” get louder while evidence-based, legitimate scientific research got muddled and overlooked because of its complexity and inaccessible language.

At an international neuroscience meeting in Barcelona in 2019... held at the CCIB... I met an American family physician named Michael Grant through a colleague of mine.

We sat through a session where a nutraceutical company’s sponsored speaker wildly exaggerated a certain plant extract’s supposed benefits for memory loss... and when it ended, Michael and I exchanged a look that felt like we were reading one another’s thoughts.

There had to be a way we could spread the truth and honesty both of us knew patients and their families around the world so desperately deserved.

We talked for hours over coffee, compared decades of notes, and sketched the bones of what eventually became Brain Health Insider on the back of a program.

Now this website is my clinic... an independent online medical publication where we always put evidence before opinion, and compassion before cleverness.

I never promise easy answers... but I promise we’ll make sense of the hard ones together.
